Now Offering Adventure Portraits: Photography + Painting
I am now offering something completely unique in the wedding photography world: adventure portraits combining photography and painting.
In collaboration with Seattle painter Niki Sherey, I am offering paintings based on photos of my client’s weddings, engagement, and family photography sessions.
Niki is a fantastically gifted artist and I am thrilled to offer this very special service for all of my clients in 2011!
Before and after:

This photo is from Patrick and Tara’s gorgeous Orcas Island wedding.
Maybe a baby… for Christmas.
It’s been a really good year. Robin and I have both done what we love and continue to pursue careers that fulfill us. Robin’s food blog is taking off and she is having a great time making friends in the food world and getting her writing recognized for how great it is. I’m very very proud of her.

This year, I celebrated the first year of my new beautiful studio loft in Seattle where I can look out over the city and work on photos all day long. It’s my favorite thing to do (besides shooting of course.)
I’ve pushed myself hard and found new ways to express myself in my photography. I’ve starting shooting completely with my own vision, applying this advice a great teacher told me:
“Shoot with your heart, not with your head.”
Thanks Peter Schwepker for that wisdom. Over time, I realize it is the only truly important lesson to learn about photography.
The biggest and best part of the year though, is this week. This is the week (fingers crossed) that Robin and I will have our first baby.

For months now we’ve been getting ready. We’ve painted and stocked a cute little nursery. We’ve had a baby shower and received almost everything we could need from our wonderful friends. We are as physically and materially prepared as we can be.

But it has also been a roller coaster of emotion. What will it be like to have a baby? Will I be a good father? Will I be able to balance my work with my family? Will I teach her what she needs to know to have a good life?
One of the reasons I chose to focus on wedding photography (out of all the ways I could express myself through photography) is for the lifestyle it allows me. I can be both creative and be there for my family. I look forward to being able to play with my little girl on weekdays and rock her to sleep in her rocker at my studio as I work on the computer, editing weddings and portraits.

Yesterday was the ‘official’ due date for us to have our baby girl. Today is the first day of being overdue. I know the baby will come when she is ready, but now, all of the sudden, I just can’t wait to meet her. I feel like life and everything else is on hold as we wait for this special perfect being to enter our lives. I want to hold her, teach her, and give her my love. All of it.

As I type this, I realize tonight could be the night. If it is, or if it is a few days from now, I will be sure to share my experience with my family, friends and you, the reader.
Wish us luck!

Kent Engagement Photography | Eveline + Chad

Last Saturday I had the chance to shoot a fantastic engagement session with Eveline and Chad at Clark Lake Park in Kent, WA. Being a Seattle wedding photographer, I tend to stay in and around the city of Seattle for most of the wedding season. It was really nice to head out to Clark Lake Park in Kent WA, and get out into nature. Chad and Eveline have a contagious enthusiasm about them and they were up for anything. We hiked all over the park with their dog Molly and found many great spots to shoot. I really love the Fall light, and to top it all off, we had the moon overhead for most of the evening. It was gorgeous.
I look forward to shooting Eveline and Chad’s wedding at Kubota Garden next summer. I’m sure it will be a blast!

Tara and Patrick | Orcas Island, Washington
I am so happy to share more photographs from Patrick and Tara’s Orcas Island Wedding. They are truly a lovely couple who put an incredible amount of energy into creating a wonderfully carefree, but elegant wedding day. Their friends and family were wordly and fun-loving. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and really supported the union of two of the most creative and compassionate people I’ve met during my time as a wedding photographer. The ceremony at Rosario Resort was thoughtful and scenic. There were many wandering deer who seemed to fit right in with the peaceful nature of the wedding. The reception, which was held at The Inn at Ship Bay, was full of fun moments and candid heartfelt speeches. Being at the Inn at Ship Bay for a wedding was particularly special for me as it was where I was married one year ago. A true treat.
I hope you enjoy these photos. I love how film captures the nearly pink light as Summer bleeds into Fall.
Thank you to Tara and Patrick for choosing me as your wedding photographer. It was an honor.

Spokane Wedding Photography | Christy + Ben | Film
I’m so happy to show you a full set of photos from Christy and Ben’s late summer wedding at Duncan Garden in Spokane, Washington. Most of the following photos were shot on film, which really captures the light and mood of their elegant day so well. Christy and Ben had a wonderful wedding in a stunning location surrounded by family and friends. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and that was really evident when I reviewed their fun photos. Every detail was so thoughtful from the gorgeous wedding dress and flowers to the golden silverware and spectacular cake. A fabulous event, to be sure.
Thank you so much for having me as your photographer.

Tara and Bret | MT. Rainier, WA
Tara and Bret are a naturally beautiful couple . . . in many senses of the word: 1. they are both park rangers, 2. their wedding was zero-waste, 3. they incorporated elements of Mt. Rainier into their wedding with pine cones, wood rounds, and native flowers.
Tara and Bret were easy to photograph and I think their beauty really comes through in everything they do. I hope you enjoy theses and much as I do.

Hayden Lake Wedding Photography | Ashley + Blake | Part 2 | Film
As promised, here is the second set of photos from the elegant wedding of Ashley and Blake at the Hayden Lake Country Club in Hayden, Idaho. These photos were taken on film, which I think captures the soft light of August so well. I hope you enjoy this set. And, if you missed the first portion of this wedding, you can see it here.
