It’s been a crazy busy summer so far. Many weddings, engagements, some fun trips to the coast and a photography show on Capitol Hill. I get questions nearly everyday in my inbox asking for photography advice. The questions range from how to use a tilt-shift lens, to how to approach and work with people to get genuine and emotional photographs. For the most part, I am able to respond to each email and help in any way I can. I believe that sharing my knowledge is the best way for me to grow as a photographer.

The only problem is when I am asked to give feedback on the portfolio and vision of a fellow photographer. There is no efficient and organized way to do so. Until now that is. That’s why I’m happy to announce my partnership with Photosynesi.

Photosynesi is a website devoted to connecting mentors with photographers of all levels looking for honest-to-goodness real feedback. Not the kind of feedback you see on Flickr (always positive and never constructive nor thoughtful), but more of the kind of the feedback that will transform the way you shoot and help propel you to the next stage of your photography, whether it be as a professional or an enthusiast.

I hope you enjoy it. I’m excited to be a pioneer with this new platform.

I went to Brazil a long long time ago when I was in college at the University of Boulder in Colorado.  It was summer break and my best friend Mark and I decided to explore as much of Brazil as possible over the span of three weeks.

We managed to hike through a beautiful jungle, explore Rio de Janeiro, nearly get mugged in Salvador da Bahia and ultimately take a 4 hour sea-taxi to a small island called Morro de Sao Paulo. Which was the best. place. ever.

I ate amazing food and met warm friendly Brazilian people everywhere I traveled. Unfortunately (or fortunately, it depends on how you look at it) I was NOT a photographer yet. Meaning that I experienced everything without a lens in front of my face. I captured a few great photos, but really, I captured a lifetime of fond memories.

Imagine my surprise when the Brazilian fashion magazine GLOSS contacted me to post some of my work…

I was touched to read so many great stories and ideas from our Valentine’s Day giveaway contest. Thank you all for participating and I wish I could take photos for each one of you. I really do.

This year’s winner is Adrienne who sent in this letter:

“My fiancé and I are getting married in spring 2011. We both love the outdoors and some of our most romantic getaways have been backpacking trips. We love the feeling of standing on top of a mountain, alone, where we can see the whole world around us. It makes you feel alive! I want our engagement photos to capture our love of adventuring together.

Although I know it’s not feasible to take a photographer backpacking, I think a great photoshoot would be at the top of a mountain, or somewhere else relatively remote where you can see into the distance. I’m going to be spending this summer in Seattle for work, and I’ve heard there’s great backpacking in the area. I’m not familiar with Seattle yet, but there must be some nearby mountains where you can drive most of the way to the top & then take a 20-minute hike to a place with a view. My fiancé can carry all the equipment if necessary — he’s great at carrying things up mountains. “

I’m excited to make some great photos for Adrienne and her fiance who will be here this summer and who share a love of the outdoors.

And watch out. I MAY take you up on the offer of your fiance schlepping my gear up the mountains!

Valentine’s Day is all about lovers. We really appreciate that here at Mastin Studio. And to celebrate love, we’d like to offer an engagement photo session to one lucky couple.  After all, what could be better than a photo shoot with an award-winning photographer to memorialize your engagement?

The winning couple will receive a 2 hour engagement session at the location of their choice (within 100 miles of Seattle, WA) and 50-60 high resolution edited images on DVD.  The winning couple will also be featured on the front page of the Mastin Studio blog.
